Red Emperor
Red Emperors are one of the true jewels of the sea and are a guaranteed way to raise the level of spirit on any boat if one is landed.
They are sought after for both their superb eating quality and for the fight they put up once hooked.
They require a sound level of skill to land ,as when they hit ,the most common referral to it is "being hit by a train"...they hit hard. The fight will continue with a series of large bumps or head shakes which will test your drag settings and line tension settings to the maximum.
Most of the time they still come up to the boat fighting and they rarely give up the fight till right at the end.
If you can pull a fair sized one of these guys up you have achieved a great catch by any fishing standards.
Small juvenile red emperors are generally found in shallow water close to shore however as they grow older they move into deeper waters (30+ metres) and take up residence on deep coastal reefs and wrecks.
This species is considered to be an excellent table fish and is highly sought after by fishers because of its excellent eating qualities. The Red Emperor (Lutjanus sebae) grows to a maximum length of approximately 1 metre.
