Description and identification:

The Yellow fin Bream is a member of the family Sparidae.

Sparid fishes have moderate-sized scales and strong spines in the first dorsal, anal and pelvic fins.

They have canine teeth at the front of the jaws followed by conical or flattened molar-like teeth at the back of the jaw.

Coastal yellow fin bream are silver, but those living in estuaries become darker in colour which is how they are sometimes confused with the black bream 

Similar fish species:

Black Bream

Because the southern limit of its distributional range overlaps with the northern range of the Black Bream, Acanthopagrus butcheri ,they are often confused.

The two species look similar but can be distinguished by their colouration, the ventral and anal fins of the Yellow fin Bream are yellow, but those of the Black Bream are brown or blackish.

As their name states, the body colour of the black bream tends to be darker also .

Distribution:

The species occurs throughout the Indo-West Pacific. In Australia it is found along the east coast from Townsville northern Queensland to the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria.

Where to catch yellow fin bream:

The most productive techniques for taking bream in estuaries, bays and harbours are based around the use of light, sensitive tackle and live or fresh baits

Generally bream like a bit of structure because that is where most of their food hangs out.

You will find bream hanging around structures like jetties, pylons, rocky outcrops, weed beds, and mangroves but can also be found around sand flats and beaches.

 

When to catch yellow fin bream:

Yellow fin bream are available all year round but are more active during the warmer periods of the year.

Growth Pattern:

The Yellow fin Bream can grow up to 60 cm in length and about 4 kg in weight , but a specimen of 1kg is a really good catch.

Common catch size is 25-35cm

Yellow fin bream are a Schooling fish.

How to handle:

Caution !
Bream have large dorsal spines and sharp teeth that can cause minor injuries. If you are inexperienced always handle your catch with a rag , towel or fish grippers .handle fish
If you do not have a rag , towel or fish grippers aproach the fish from the underbelly side and hold the fish behind the gills with your thumb on one side and fingers on the other side.  
Make sure you bleed and gut you fish as soon as it is caught so preserve the texture of the flesh.
Try to get your catch into a slurry of ice and saltwater also helps preserve flesh texture.
